Fantasy football injury updates and impact

An injury designation on its own is not a decision. Pick the player and the status you saw on your league platform and this tells you what it costs in points, who inherits the work, and whether the replacement is worth a waiver claim.

Injury status

Most questionable players do play, but a snap or touch count usually follows.

The call

Questionable costs about 9 points of expectation, mostly through reduced snaps. Start him if your alternative projects below 14.3 points, and set a backup plan for the inactive report.

How to turn a status into a lineup call

  1. 1. Read the official status. Find the player's designation on your league platform: out, doubtful, questionable or limited practice.
  2. 2. Convert the status to expected points. Multiply his normal weekly projection by the odds he plays and by an efficiency haircut for reduced snaps.
  3. 3. Identify the replacement. Find the next player on the same team at the same position and estimate how much of the vacated workload transfers to him.
  4. 4. Decide start, sit or add. Start the injured player only if his adjusted projection beats your best alternative. Otherwise start the alternative and claim the replacement before the news is confirmed.

Common questions

Should I start a player listed as questionable?

Usually yes. Questionable players suit up roughly seven times out of ten, but they often play a reduced snap count, which costs about 10–20 percent of a normal projection. Start him when your alternative projects below that reduced number, and have a backup ready for the inactive report 90 minutes before kickoff.

Is doubtful the same as out?

For lineup purposes, treat doubtful as out. Roughly one doubtful player in ten plays, and those who do rarely see a full workload.

Who benefits most when a starter is injured?

Running back injuries transfer the most value because touches consolidate onto one or two backs. Wide receiver injuries spread out across the route tree, so the replacement's bump is smaller. Quarterback backups inherit the volume but almost never the efficiency.

When should I add the backup?

Before the status is confirmed. Handcuff and next-man-up value is priced into waiver bidding within hours of a report, so the cheap window is the day the news breaks, not the day it is confirmed.

Does this page list current injuries?

No — it does not publish injury news, because official statuses change through Friday and Saturday practice reports. It takes the status you already saw on your league platform and turns it into a points and replacement decision.
