Dynasty values assets, not weeks
In redraft, a player is worth the points he scores between now and Week 17. In dynasty, he is worth those points plus every future season you control him, discounted by the risk that he never gets there. That is why a 23-year-old with a middling projection can cost more than a 30-year-old with a better one — you are pricing a stream, not a single season.
Startup drafts: pay for the middle of the curve
The first two rounds of a startup are usually efficient — everyone knows who the elite young producers are. The exploitable range is rounds four through eight, where proven 25-to-27-year-old receivers get pushed down for unproven second-year players. Buy the production you can bank while the room chases upside, then spend rookie capital on the upside instead.
Age curves by position
Running backs lose value fastest and rarely hold a starting workload past 27, so treat them as short-term assets and sell into a hot stretch. Receivers hold value into their late twenties and tight ends peak late, which makes an established tight end a stable multi-year asset. Quarterbacks are the longest-lived of all and are worth a premium in Superflex, where a startable second quarterback can decide a decade of the league.
Rookie picks are currency, not a plan
Future firsts trade at a discount before the season and a premium once the standings sort out. A contender should convert future picks into starters early; a rebuilding team should collect them in the same window and cash them the following summer when demand peaks. Hoarding picks without ever converting them is how rosters stay permanently mediocre.
Decide contend or rebuild, then act like it
The worst dynasty position is fifth place with an aging core. Grade your roster by how many top-24 starters you control for the next two seasons. If that number puts you in the top third of the league, buy win-now production at a premium. If it does not, sell every player over 27 while someone still wants them, and set a target season to be good in rather than drifting.
Keeper penalties change every valuation
In keeper and hybrid dynasty formats, a player costs a draft pick to retain, so his real value is his production minus the value of the slot you burn. A wide receiver kept in the third round is only a bargain if he outproduces the third-rounder you would have drafted. Run that subtraction on every keeper before the deadline instead of keeping the biggest name.
